It has all the benefits of the hurricane lantern in a smaller, compact, more robust format and no paraffin to spill.

I now carry the aforementioned headtorch, an emergency back-up mini headtorch and a UCO Original (NOT MINI/MICRO*) candle lantern with the insect repellent candles for summer and the normal ones for winter (I haven’t tried the beeswax ones yet), mine also has an emergency detachable LED light in the base which is occasionally useful. So if I love it so much why do I leave it at home? Well bulk is one issue and the other is that the paraffin spills easily (even though the manufactures claim it doesn’t!). While I do leave mine at home now I do frequently turn all the house lights off and sit round with the hurricane light reading which makes for a lovely pleasant evening far from the madness of the world! Do not estimate the warming effect: it will take the chill off end of season/winter camping in a tent making it a much more pleasant experience.Keeps batteries out of land fill and the paraffin is cheap to buy.One fill of paraffin will last for weeks and you can easily tell when it might need a refill by looking in the tank (much harder with batteries when it is often safer just to replace them).A pleasing smell (and as Stinkwheel has pointed out can be used to repel insects).I think the “white light” from LEDs too harsh. A much more pleasant light for sitting round in an evening – we have had many evening when the weather has been terrible sitting round the hurricane lamp and it does have a morale boosting effect.I did carry a hurricane type light camping for many years and it has very many good points:

at night time… when you are far from a usb port and there is no sunlight to recharge it until the next day whereupon you spend time and effort making sure it is sat in the sun but try not to forget it when moving camp. I have also found that the types you are referring to are not particularly well made and that they tend to run out of juice just when you want them…. Personally for me I don’t see the point in carrying the LED type lantern partly on the basis that you will get a better, more practical, more adjustable light in a smaller and more robust package from a headtorch which you will typically carry on your person and use for all practical matters round camp anyway and you can simply hang it up to act as a lantern.
